St. Thomas Public Library

The mission of St. Thomas Public Library is:

 “TO INFORM, EDUCATE, AND ENRICH OUR COMMUNITY.”

Internet Use Policy

GENERAL

St. Thomas Public Library provides computers for use by the public in the Adult and Children and Teens areas of the Library. These workstations are provided through funding from the Friends of St. Thomas Public Library and the Community Access Partnerships program. Some other workstations, appropriately labeled, are for use strictly as Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs). The computer in the George Thorman Room on the mezzanine is for Genealogy and Local History use only.

Adult Services Department

Public Access Workstations are available on a first come, first served basis. Reservations can be made by contacting Information Desk staff. Public Internet Workstations may be used for a total of one (1) hour in any given day and this time may be subdivided into two (2) half hour sessions. Users must sign in at the Information Desk with a Library card or other form of ID in order to use the Public Internet Access workstations.

Children and Teens Services Department

Public access computers are available on a first come first served basis. Children are asked to sign in with staff to use the computers.

Parents or guardians are responsible for their children’s use of the Internet

General

St. Thomas Public Library is responsible only for information on its WEB page directly related to the Library and the Friends of St. Thomas Public Library. Links to other sites are the responsibility of their owners.

Library staff will offer support only concerning the operation of Library provided hardware and software. Staff will assist only in as much as their knowledge, skills and time permit.

Software and hardware configurations are not to be changed, added or altered by anyone other than Library staff. Software will be added only by Systems staff.

Any user violating this policy or rules of the Library is subject to loss of access privilege and any other actions deemed appropriate.

LEGAL

The St. Thomas Public Library Public Access Internet Workstations are to be used in strict accordance with all local, Provincial and Federal Acts, Statutes and Regulations.

Parents and caregivers must be responsible for the actions and habits of any children under their supervision. Please review our “Internet Safety” page (link) for assistance. The staff of the Library cannot “police” the use of our workstations to ensure that children are not accessing improper material.

Use of Library resources for obscene, racist or illegal purposes may result in suspension of privilege.

While some filtering software may be in place, the St. Thomas Public Library cannot be held responsible for the effectiveness or currency of it as this technology and means of circumventing it are very dynamic and constantly changing.

St. Thomas Public Library will accept no liability in relation to material gathered, material created, damage done, or information lost as a result of using Library technology resources.

St. Thomas Public Library will not be held responsible for copyright or intellectual property infringements by users of Public Internet Workstations.

Attempts to compromise or circumvent Library or any other network(s), internal or external will not be permitted and such use will be reported to authorities.

Please respect the rights of others in their use of the Library and its resources and their expectations of the Library as a quiet and safe place to work and spend leisure time.
